Scott Atwell joined Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in early 2021. Born and raised in Key West, Scott is a multi-generational Conch (the term given to natives) whose family in the 1800’s migrated from the Bahamas. As an undergraduate at the University of Miami, he worked in the sports publicity office, spawning a 30+ year career as a communicator, first as a television sportscaster and then as a public affairs manager in higher education. While serving as chief alumni officer at Florida State University, he earned a master’s degree and was an adjunct professor of communications. He has also worked as senior vice president for a worldwide consulting firm and as chief executive officer of the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce. Atwell and his wife enjoy collecting heart-healthy red wine. And around the island you may hear locals refer to him as “Flash,” a derivative of “News Flash,” which was inspired by his middle school job as a sportscaster on local radio station WKWF.
